Replicas and tape backup
We currently create replicas of our VMware VM's instead of backups and are considering implementing back up to tape. I am having trouble finding out whether this is an optimal set up and whether transitioning to backups would be a better idea? Can anyone help?

Re: Replicas and tape backup
Hello.
Recommended approach is to have backups besides replicas as in case of data corruption, corrupted data will be replicated to the remote VM.
You need to perform regular backup of VM before copying the backup to tape.
Thanks!

Re: Replicas and tape backup
Thanks for your reply. I think we only have enough space for either replica's or backups though so would there be any benefits to tape backups from using backups instead of replica's?

Re: Replicas and tape backup
Backup and replication are completely different protection approaches.
I would suggest reading this article. Thanks!

Thanks, light is slowly dawning on Marble head.
We probably need to switch to a dual backup strategy where we replicate core VM's for low RTO and backup all VM's for the improved storage use and use the backups for the BUTP.

Re: Replicas and tape backup
Got it. I wouldn't think of tape job if you wrote BUTT initially anyway
Glad we found the solution.
