PowerVault TL2000 with iSCSI Controller Card

Post by lewisdrummond »

I'm looking to purchase a Dell PowerVault TL2000 (2U autoloader with 24 tapes) with an iSCSI controller card. I believe this will allow me to mount the TL2000 into Windows 2008 R2 as an iSCSI drive, which will then be accessible to Veeam directly.

I know that Veeam doesn't support direct backup to tape, but is the logic in my above thinking accurate?

Lewis, I guess it should be ok, as soon as you're able to mount iSCSI drive to a Windows server with Veeam Backup and choose it as destination target.

May not work as Veeam not just run backup files like legacy software, it also updates and removes existing files. I am not sure how well tape handles random I/O ;)

I'm not really sure what you're trying to accomplish. If you present a tape library to Windows via iSCSI, it's still a tape drive, it doesn't appear as a hard drive. You would still need software that understands how to handle tape.
