VM chargeback storage tiers

Post by asdf29871 »

Hello,

we got got different prices for different storage tiers. I am looking for a way to calculate the price for vms which have their vmdks on different storage tiers. Is there any way to do this?

For example:

VM1 has 100GB on tier 1 and 100GB on tier 2.
Tier 1: 1GB = 1€
Tier 2: 1GB = 2€

Hey there.

Quick question: Are you distingishing these tiers with the use of SPBM attached to different datastores?

Hey,
no, we do not use Storage Policys currently. Would that be the only way to accomplish it? Furthermore we use strorage drs clusters.

Hello,
That's not possible now because Chargeback reports just appeared in v9.5, but your feedback helps us to understand how to improve it in next versions.
Are we talking about VM configuration chargeback or VM performance chargeback report?
Thanks!

In my mind we could easily report on the different Storage Policy tags (VM configuration chargeback) to which you could associate a cost and report on...therefore achieving what you are after.

The problem which still would be there is. How to to enter different prices for the storage tiers?

At the moment you can add pricing for a number of metrics...it would just be a matter of adding additional boxes per storage policy/tag to the report configuration. You know what each tag represents in terms of cost...so it just becomes a case of adding that value to the report next to the storage policy/tag.

This is me thinking out loud... Nikita will have the functional requirements in mind.

Anthony is right. One of the workarounds is to generate report several times with different price for GB of storage.

You can group VMs with Business View based residing datastores. And then run individual reports for those VM groups with desired storage price.
The only limitation is VMs disks on different datastores. But that is not a usual case.
Thanks!

Well... Since this isn't possible at the moment. Any chance that it's gonna be added to the feature list?

It's added to the feature list, thanks for the request.
Have you tried workaround suggested above?

Currently i use the datastore name to get the tier for vms which are not splitted to different tiers.
