Second Backup over VPN via ISCSI

Post by eisback »

Hi, a couple of weeks ago we created a second backup job to an ISCSI target which is connected via VPN (both sites have 50 MBit down and 10 MBit up). It is working quite good but it not as quick as expected although only 10 GB of data must be transferred. What really takes very long is the backup file merge task (about 6h). Do I have any advantages if I create a backup copy job instead or are there other (better) options in our case? Thanks, Nico

Hey Nico,

The merge is probably taking awhile because the merge operations happen source side since it's added as iscsi. Veeam's logic for selecting the server to handle the processing on is that if it's directly connected, the processing is done on that server. In the case of your set up, you're moving the reads and writes during merge across the link during the merge process, which is why it's taking so long.

Backup Copy should do it though just as long as you put a gateway server on the other end and present the storage to it there. You could do the same thing with a backup job, of course, but with Backup Copy you get GFS.

Hi Nico,

Harvey is right, deploying Gateway server with attached iSCSI target to it in the offsite, would allow you to dedicate link between sites only for VM data delivery, thus merge\synthetic operations will be processed locally.
