Configure Linux repo backed by S3 with 9.5 Professional

Post by Keebs107 »

Is there a best practice to backing up jobs to Amazon S3 using a file gateway and not the Virtual Tape Library. I've read the documentation but it is still unclear.

Hi Anderson,

First: Welcome to the forums
I haven't used the file gateway so I am not certain how it should work. However, I think the biggest problem will be when the transforms and such need to happen. So how are you planning to use this? Let the backups land on a on-premises storage first and then do a backup copy job to S3 (through the file gateway)?

Cheers,
Mike

Mike,

Hi and thanks for replying. What I am planning on doing is backing up direct to a local SAN and having a secondary target on a Linux host that is NFS based. The SAN could hold about 2 months of backup jobs and then S3 would have anything older than 2 months. I have a call in today with an implementation specialist where I hope to get a better understanding of the capabilities. I picked Veeam based after leaving BE for a decade. So far I really like the product but want to make sure I use it to the fullest capabilities.

If the files land on that secondary target as files (and nothing more, no transforms after that or changes) then I assume (from what I have read about it) that it should not be an issue. But curious to hear what the specialist thinks. Feel free to share his thoughts with us ;-)

Cheers

Ok, Well the call went well and it looks as though it is a possibility to backup the way I mentioned. The specialist was spot on and walked through some other features that I was aware of. Overall - I am excited to start this in production.

Let us know the results. I'm kind of thinking that others are following this process also at this moment ;-)
