SQL 2017

Post by csinetops »

My DB admin just pinged me, I guess SQL 2017 went GA today and he wants to upgrade. Does the latest release of Veeam support backing SQL 2017 up?

As usual, prior to claiming any kind of support we will need to run tests against the GA code.

Yes, Update 3 should bring full support for MSSQL 2017.

Hi Vitaly.

Can you tell me please what rights Veeam needs on DB side (Security etc)?
And is Update 3 now fully SQL 2017 compatible?

Hi Peter, yes, Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 3 is fully compatible with SQL Server 2017.

You can find all the required permissions here.

Thanks @foggy.

Can you just tell me what Collation the DB needs to have?
We do need to have a specific one or it can be chosen?

Collation doesn't matter.

Hi guys,

What about Enterprise Manager? While VB&R user guide lists SQL Server 2017 as supported, EM user guide does not: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95

Is this just a documentation issue?

We just have converted a SQL 2017 intallation from virtual VM to a physical server, - will veeam also support backup/restore on physical (microsoft) servers ?

If you're asking whether Veeam Agent for Windows supports backing up physical SQL Server 2017, then the answer is yes ;)

This may have been answered elsewhere, but is it possible to move a database from sql 2012 to 2017?

What we're planning to do is upgrade to a new Veeam server following the steps outlined in this KB: https://www.veeam.com/kb1889

I would like to install sql 2017 on the new server, but I am wondering if I'll run into any issues when I restore the configuration since the old server is running sql 2012.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes this should work. You can always go forward, but you can't go backwards with the database backup and restore.

Thanks Vitaliy S.! We can't wait to upgrade to this new server... We're going from a 4-core aged Dell server to a 40-core R810 with 256GB Ram. Definitely will be hitting that SAN hard now!
