Export a SQL database to .bak files from Veeam Explorer

Post by frankive » 1 person likes this post

Feature request:
Be able to export a sql-database to .bak files from Veeam Explorer.
Most of our thir-part consulents prefer to have the backup delivered as a .bak

Hi Frank,

As a workaround you can always do local backups and then get these bak files via file level restore wizard even now.

Thanks!

Frank, do you mean to have entire database in bak file, or just incremental log?

Vityaly: yes i am aware of that and it is a ok workaround. just not 100%.. :)

Kostya: I would be happy if I could right click on a database in a veeam explorer and export it as a .bak file so I can send it to developers.
I am aware that i could just start a surebackup and then do it manually in the sql management studio. Though, that is 90% and not 100% intuitive.. :)
So not a very important request, but still, from a user perspective it would be great since many other backup vendor does actually always export it as a .bak file at restore too.

+1 on this request. This would be quite handy exporting to BAK. Also being able to restore a SQL database in NORECOVERY mode.

YES!! This is a question I just asked about - how to restore from a Veeam backup while retaining the ability to replay transaction logs to a point in time.

+1 for this feature.

We provide this capability natively since v8?

Yes that's true you can do this when all backups are taken with Veeam however there are situations where a SQL DB may have been backed up by another method for some reason.

For example we had a situation where the full backup of a database was taken by Veeam. A user restored over the wrong database but they had fortunately\unfortunately made a tail-log backup with SQL as part of there restore. It's possible to replay this log if you have the original full backup in BAK or you if can restore in NORECOVER mode. Veeam can only perform the full consistent restore AFAIK.

I have not been able to find this feature. How do we access it? I don't see .bak file indicated in any of the export options in SQL Explorer.

Hi John, which feature are you referring to? This thread is discussing a feature request to export database as a .bak file, currently this functionality is not available.

Yes that's the feature I was referring to. I thought a prior reply stated that this capability was supported starting in v8 but maybe I was misinterpreting. This feature would be very helpful, for the same reasons the other respondents have stated. Thanks for the prompt reply!

I do local SQL Server backups using scripts from https://ola.hallengren.com.
One advantage is knowing exactly how SQL Server backups are done
I backup with the VM with Veaam B&R.
On a regular basis I use FLR to copy file .BAK file and test the backup.
(Yes, I know about SureBackup and also use SureBackup)

+1 for this feature from me, too. At the moment our ERP Admin is using the hourly created DB backup to refresh his local test system from time to time. Since we are going to switch from native backup to Veeam Transaction Log Backup soon, this would eliminate the additional step of creating a db dump manualy.
