Why do my offline VM's take considerably longer to backup?

Post by sambrown »

I'm just curious - but what causes the backups to take longer and have to read more of the vmdk when they are not running?

It seems vm's that are not normally running are not taking advantage of backup-to-backup change block tracking
compared to running vm's?

Does veaam 9.5u3 with esxi 6.0u3 ignore CBT when making daily full backups for offline vm's?

Why would it be different from vm's that are running daily when backed up?

I run all my backups as full daily's as it is easier to off-site and storage for backups is cheap.

Any thoughts? i'd rather not power these vm's but I suppose I could with a script.
That seems kind of ghetto to have to do!

Hi Sam, if the VMs are always turned off, there's no CBT for them, indeed. This shouldn't have huge effect if you're doing everyday fulls though. How much longer does it take?

About 30-60 minutes each, If they were powered on but inactive wouldn't they only take about 1 minute for CBT to backup all of them (Theoritically of course)?

This amount of time by 7 days a week, if that makes any sense, Why would the CBT be run through over and over each day?

I'm not sure I follow. You said you do active full each day, so entire VM data needs to be read each time, irrespective of whether CBT is enabled or not, VM is running or turned off (for running VMs CBT allows to skip zero blocks during the full run, but the job still reads all non-zero blocks).

Oh I think I figured it out! I just have to power on the VM's for a minute for the CBT to reduce in size - then power off - since I've vmotioned the VM's to their final resting datastore!

now the daily active full has gone down to:

MopDevClient7 Success 9:00:31 AM 9:02:31 AM 233.0 GB 0.0 B 29.3 KB 0:02:00
Camera Success 9:00:31 AM 9:07:18 AM 139.0 GB 9.7 GB 8.9 GB 0:06:47
xxxDVM7 Success 9:06:17 AM 9:08:26 AM 128.0 GB 375.5 MB 100.4 MB 0:02:08
xxxVUE1 Success 9:06:17 AM 9:09:00 AM 130.0 GB 1.4 GB 534.5 MB 0:02:42
GammaMailer Success 9:06:57 AM 9:08:42 AM 250.0 GB 1.3 GB 371.4 MB 0:01:45
Voicemail Success 9:07:42 AM 9:09:36 AM 636.0 GB 402.0 MB 70.3 MB 0:01:54
xxxnews Success 9:09:02 AM 9:09:55 AM 74.5 GB 152.0 MB 12.7 MB 0:00:52
MAS90 Success 9:09:02 AM 9:10:21 AM 64.0 GB 229.5 MB 62.3 MB 0:01:18

Total of 10 minutes backup time each day!

much better. I think i worked out the issue here!
