Veeam backup to AWS

Post by patrickwilson412 »

Hello,

I currently use Veeam Backup and Replication to backup my VM's to a physical backup server on site. I'm looking to possibly use Amazon Glacier as a secondary destination for my Backups. But from the videos on Veeam's web site, it wants me to create a Storage Gateway for me to be able to use the Virtual Tapes. Is this even necessary? Is there a way to just send my backup jobs directly to Glacier? Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello Patrick,

The best way is, indeed, to use Amazon Gateway VTL or StarWind VTL for Amazon. Virtual tapes are ‘passive’ and independent chunks of data and could be easily archived to Glacier storage.

So when my data gets backed up to the tape, is it then automatically in AWS? Or is it just sitting on my Storage Gateway?

The data will be uploaded first to storage gateway and from it it will be transferred in the background to AWS. S3 at first but when you eject tape from VTL it will be moved to Glacier.

[MERGED] VEEAM to AWS Glacier?

Post by kcalderw »

We're a somewhat new customer to VEEAM. Is it possible yet to backup directly to AWS Glacier for VMs (.vhdx files)?

So is that an add-on product?

kcalderw,

Yes, VTL allows you to emulate tape device and send data to Amazon storage in virtual tape media format. Take a look at this blogpost for more details.

Glad I found this thread. So a question. Has anyone on the thread implemented VTL via AWS with Veeam? I am curious what pitfalls you may have encountered but also what capacity and the cost of what you've pushed/been pushing into AWS.

Thanks!

I'm really interested in hearing from anyone that has implemented the VTL to AWS as well. So far I haven't found anyone that's using it, but somebody has to be, right? I'm most interested in what the actual storage cost was after implementation, and for how much data, was it close to what the AWS cost calculators estimated?

We ended up not going with the Amazon VTL and instead went with another third party cloud provider that we use for our secondary backup copy jobs. The VTL's were just way too slow.
