Feature Request: Restore only security

Post by dwbrewer »

Backup Exec has a restore option to restore only the security information and file system permissions for files that exist at the destination; do not restore the file content.
Sometimes administrators check to role the file permissions down from top incorrectly.

Daniel,

That is interesting. As you know we cannot do that today and if you want to do this, you need to restore the files, including the ownership and other permissions.

I am not sure if I understood your use case correctly. Could you elaborate (and if you have more use cases, that would be appreciated!)

Thanks

Mike

I'd also like this feature. Many times the owner of a folder has mucked up subfolder permissions only by simply ticking the wrong box.

When restoring in Commvault, you get the option for Restore ACLs Only, Restore Data Only, Restore Both Data and ACLs.

We have to keep using Commvault for this reason and others as Veeams FLR is much slower and the restore options are limited.

Mark,

Thanks for the use case. Any change to elaborate on the "restore options are limited" besides that we can't restore ACLs alone? Are we missing other important features?

Hello,

I suppose this hasn't been incorporated into VBR 9.5 U3 already? When will this be possible? Much needed Feature!

Hello,

You're right, it wasn't implemented yet.
As you might know we don't share any ETA for the features in development. Thanks!

Of course I know!

Unfortunately this feature is so essential to most users coming up the way from Backup Exec to Veeam Backup & Replication. Imagine a scenario where ACL's are suddenly destroyed in many different directories for whatever reason. With VBR you are forced to restore the complete data of a fileserver, because you might not know, which directories ACL's have been lost (or do a quick rollback of a VMDK). Maybe data has been changed or newly created since the last nightly backup, this data is lost (because of the quick rollback), so another incremental backup or quick backup before rollback is necessary, so that this data is not lost. After the server has been quickly rollbacked, to restore ACL's, you are forced to restore the new or changed data to the same server again.

Really, this is too complex imo.

With the competitor product you can safely restore ACL's, without the necessity to restore Megabytes, Gigabytes or Terrabytes of file-data.

Really worse!
