Hi all,
I have read through the documentation about how GFS and copy jobs actually work.
Still I do not fully understand how the copy jobs handle some things.
That's why I hope you can help me out with 2 simple questions.
Normal Backup
14 days, full backup every 7th day on sunday/monday between 0:00 and 2:00 (depends on the servers to backup)
Copy Job (GFS)
7 days, full backup closest to sunday 3:00
4 weeks
11 months
10 years
1) When does the full backup within the 7 days in the copy job happen?
Does it use the full backup from the normal backup cycle + incrementals until sunday 3:00?
Does it just use the nearest full backup without incrementals?
Or is this actually the weekly full backup?
2) How many weeks or months do you actually need for full GFS with veeam?
I am asking because I do not know what happens if veeam reaches... let's say the 4th week.
Will it use the 4th week as a montly backup (storing 3 weeks + 1 monthly) or keep them both (4 weeks + 1 monthly which is identical to the 4th week)?
Same goes for monthly and yearly backups.
I know that those are very basic questions but I did not find a clear answer to it.
Sadly I do not have time to wait a full year to see what will happen
Thanks in advance and have a nice day

Re: GFS Copy Jobs Full Backup Schedule
Okay, just short after posting I found one answer but can not edit the first post anymore.
"With every new backup copy interval, Veeam Backup & Replication transforms the backup chain and moves the full backup forward. This procedure repeats until the full backup file reaches the day when the weekly backup is scheduled."
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95
Somehow I managed to overread that part multiple times...
The second question from above still stands.

Re: GFS Copy Jobs Full Backup Schedule
In case both weekly and monthly backups are scheduled at the same day, a single restore point will be marked both as weekly and monthly. The same applies to other GFS periods.EDV4all38 wrote:2) How many weeks or months do you actually need for full GFS with veeam?

Re: GFS Copy Jobs Full Backup Schedule
Hi foggy,
yep, that is what the documentation says.
Still I wonder if 4 weeks, 12 months, x years is correct then.
Should be because if they are just marked I won't end up with double full backups, right?

Re: GFS Copy Jobs Full Backup Schedule
You're right, you can have a full backup with weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly markings at the same time. Thanks!
