[Feature Request] Instant Recovery for Agents to VMware

Post by Geissbock » 1 person likes this post

Hello together,

This option exists for HyperV but not for VMware vSphere. It would be a nice to have when a physical server is broken and you have to restore it very fast.

I asked this question in a support case and was told I should ask here for the new feature. I got a workaround with the restore iso for agent-backups and a vm that I create manually for the restore.

Best Regards

Since your topic concerns Veeam Agent for Windows, I've moved the thread to the corresponding subforum.

As to feature request, this is not a first time we hear such feedback, and this request has been tracked already.

Thanks.

Hello Andreas,

Thanks for your request.
I got a workaround with the restore iso for agent-backups and a vm that I create manually for the restore.
Additionally you can use Export as virtual disk functionality in Veeam B&R to restore a volume from the backup to a vmdk and then mount it to the VM.

Thanks for your reply and your moving. I wasn't sure which subforum is more correct.
I thougth so that this was already requested, but your support meant I should open a thread if I want it.

I tried it with the restore to a vmdk. But there I got a error. Therefore I talked with your support.

I got the described workaround. That is good enough to know if I need to do a restore, but I hope for the feature, so it would be very fast and easy if it really happens.

Thanks.

Hello,

Any update about this feature request? Would make sense to have this feature for our VMware customers.
A customer backing up a physical server could easily bring it back as a VM on a VMware infrastructure.

For the "Export to VMDK" workaround, as today it doesn't seems possible to export directly to a VMware datastore. You need to export it to a Windows machine and then manually copy/move it to a datastore.
Any plan to improve this process? Main goal here is to reduce RTO when protecting a machine with agents.

Thanks, Mathieu.

[MERGED] Recovery to Hyper-V VM, but where is my vSphere???

Post by FabianF »

Hey together,

I use Veeam 9.5 for my vSphere infrastructure and I use one agent for a physical workstation. I look around what I can do if my workstation failed and I need a restore. I saw it is possible to recovery to a hyper-v vm, but what is with vSphere? Always I need to export the content as virtual disk and link them to a vm or is there any way to this like a normal Entire VM Recovery (including registration)?

Currently, not, but we've already tracked this feature request. Thanks.

Any chance of this feature being released soon?

A lot of my partners using cloud cloud connect will like to do an instant VM recovery.

I understand they can do a full VM restore right?

Hello nicktan.

Cannot provide any ETA for Instant restore to VMware functionality. As a temporary workaround you can create a blank VM and perform Bare Metal Restore via Veeam Recovery Media mounted to this blank VM. Cheers!

What I find difficult to understand is that this feature was available for Hyper V in one of the first releases of the agent, and about a year later is still not available for Vsphere?
Based on my Knowledge -and correct me if I'm wrong- VMware is still the clear market leader? So why don't, if you want to give priority to one, not develop it for the market leader first? Or is there some kind of agreement that wouldn't allow this?

System32,

Instant restore to Hyper-V is technically Windows to Windows recovery, which means no issues with drivers and disk allocation. That's the only reason why recovery to Hyper-V was delivered first. We keep tracking this feature request very attentively, so thank you for sharing your vote. Cheers!
