Restore from tape and simultaneously backup

Post by ief »

I have two questions:
- Is it possible to backup more than one VM simultaneously in one backup job?
- When backup to tape is used. What is the restore procedure when content is needed from tape?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello Ivo,

No, you need to configure multiple jobs to run VMs backups simultaneously.

As soon as you move backup files from tapes, just import them to the backup console and perform a restore procedure.

Thanks.

As for question 2:

You don't even need to have B&R console to do a restore. There's a tiny "extract.exe" utility which can be put to tape along with VBK file. For more information, please refer to this topic.

thanks for the reply.
With one job you can select the cluster so all new VMs will automatically protected. How you do this with 2 jobs?

You can add container objects (e.g. clusters, hosts, datastores, VM folders) to the job to achieve that.

Just note the major caveat that the "extract.exe" can't restore incremental backups, only a full VBK. Not a problem if you use reverse incrementals and copy the VBK each night, but a big issue if you use the default incremental backup and only copy the VIB file to tape each night (the recommended option for tape backups by Veeam).

If you run multiple VM backup jobs simultaneously, will de-duplication still take affect across the VMs?

No, deduplication option is per job only.
