Feature request: Join backup files from seperate jobs

Post by peturarna »

We would like to see the the possibility to join backup files from old copy job to a new job. We are a service provider and use auto-billing systems to measure backup data for our customers, and sometimes we have to re-create copy jobs because of error in jobs or new retention policies. To keep up with retention policies, we have to keep the old job / backup files for certain amount of time, and because of that we have two big jobs with more amount of data than is necessary. The possibility to move monthly or yearly GFS backup files to the new job and join them in one single job would be useful in this situation.

Hi Petur, thanks for your request, however, I believe you can map the new job to existing backup files and it will pick up GFS points as well. Wouldn't this address your request?

Thanks. It would work in cases were we create a new job and map the old backup immediately to the new job. But in some cases we need to do this after the new job has run, and then we could not combine both new and old backup files to the same backup job, which is what we need.

I got your point, however, merging different backup chains is not always a good idea, could cause mess with restore points.
