network usage 100% during replication

Post by DanielS »

Hello,
I am using backup and replication to transfert vm replica to DR site
I have no direct san access so I use our 1 GB Ethernet link for that

my veeam replication server is on prod site and is a VM

I thought that veeam only ask vmware to do the file transfer from an ESX to an other but if I see the network utilisation of my veeam server
I have more than 100 mo during replication of the servers used by veeamagent.exe from veeam server to the destination host

can some one help me to figureout the way veeam does replication? do I have to give veeam server a 1Gb link to the network?

regards
Alexey D.

Hello Danielm

Please refer to these topics, I believe they should cover your questions:
how to monitor and throttle the replication bandwidth

thanks Alexey
it helps

could you provide more informations on the answer bellow what is the difference between esx and esxi witch explain that?

Q2, should we place the VEEAM B&R server near the source ESX server, or near the destination ESX server? in term of the performance and network impact.

Q2: For vSphere: in case of ESX target, it does not matter. In case of ESXi target, it is better to place near destination host (to make VMDK rebuilding traffic not go over WAN between Veeam server and target ESXi).

Q1) Does not matter in case of fat ESX target.

Q2) Yes, on target side in case of ESXi. Due to chatter traffic between B&R console and ESXi will also be local.

Here's also a good link to read: Veeam Server Location
