VBO Online backup Performance

Post by agrob »

Good Day

I know performance depends on different points like internet connection, item count, item size etc. but it would be great to have some real live data regarding which performance we can expect.

Here are some of my staticstics

OneDrive
Full Backup
- Duration: 6h 21min
- Objects: 443
- Transfered: 110GB (85481 Items)
- Processing Rate: 4.9MB/s (3 Items)

Incremental Backup
- Duration: 1h 42min
- Objects: 437 (exluded some after full)
- Transfered: 354MB (125 Items)
- Processing Rate: 58.7KB/s (3 Items)

Mailbox
Incremental Backup (dont have full statistics anymore)
- Duration: 1h 56min
- Objects: 737 (exluded some after full)
- Transfered: 2.3GB (71519 Items)
- Processing Rate: 338.4KB/s (10 Items)

Sharepoint
Incremental Backup (dont have full statistics anymore)
- Duration: 1h 6min
- Objects: 98
- Transfered: 103.8MB (843 Items)
- Processing Rate: 26.8KB/s (0 Items)

Do you see any big difference in performance regarding to your statistics data?
Backup is not very fast in my opinion, but hard to tell is it normal or not when there are no data to compare.

Thanks
Best Regards

Hey Andre,

As you said yourself, it really depends on a few things. I have seen better numbers, and worse numbers. The first thing you can do is start playing with the threads. In some cases, you will see that lowering the threads will make your backups faster, especially when your VBO server/ proxy don't have great resources. See here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=20

It could also be the other way around, that you have more than enough resources and you can up the threads to a higher number.

Last but not least, it could also be MSFT throttling that kicks in which means we are being slowed down

Hello Mike

Thank you for your reply. I'll check the threads settings and monitor the system resources after change.
You mentoined the MSFT throttling, do you know is there anything i can configure myself on the tenant/organization regarding the throttling or is it a MS Support thing?

As a tenant you can't change it yourself. You can however contact MSFT support and request to change your throttling settings (it will still be limited at a certain point in time but the values will be higher)

Hi,

I’ve started playing around with the threads, and initial testing seems to indicate not much of a difference in performance of 10 vs 64.

The CPU and RAM are both okay when looking at Task Manager etc.

The link you provided indicated that there are other attributes to look at such as throttling or connection failures. Where can we monitor those?

Mailbox backup is pretty quick (has been for the past year or so), but the OneDrive backups appear to take a long time. As an example it is taking over an hour to backup one OneDrive, and this is with no changes in it. I’m wondering if it is related to the number of threads, as the RAM/CPU/bandwidth are all faily low when I look.

James,

Throttling is something which you need to talk to with MSFT support.
Considering that you are low on CPU and MEM, could you up the threads to 128 and see if that improves it?
