Recovering a single server

Post by JamesNT »

Imagine the following scenario:

Single physical server running Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V. The server has two guests: Domain Controller and Applications server. Veeam Backup and Replication is installed on the Applications server and both VM's are backed up to offsite and local backup.

Physical server dies.

New server arrives from Dell and Windows 2016 is once again installed with Hyper-V role.

What is the best way to restore backups without having to install full Veeam Backup and Replication (which includes SQL Server) on the host, recover backups, then uninstall from host?

You can restore backups without having Veeam components via extract.exe utility . However, only full backups can be restored this way. Thanks.

Ok. So having a backup with a full backup that is four days old but with incrementals as of the last hour means I can only restore the full backup which means I lose 4 days of data. Not very appealing.

If you use reverse incremental backup mode, your latest restore point will always be a full backup.

What Vladimir said is absolutely the easiest way. Another way would be to simply install Veeam Backup Free Edition onto a windows 10 or something and start restoring from there.

Without backup server installed that is the only option that you have.

But can you elaborate on your concern regarding installing backup server? Installation should not take longer than few minutes and you can even stick to free edition, as Mike's suggested.

Thanks.

I don't want to install full Veeam B&R, that includes SQL Server, on a Hyper-V host. Therefore, it appears my option to recover is this:

* Install Veeam B&R on Hyper-V host.
* Restore domain controller and VM that contains Veeam B&R
* Continue restoring remaining VMs
* Remove Veeam B&R from Host.

Not ideal, but it works.

In your case it seems to be the only option indeed. Thanks.

James,

Maybe one more option (at least that is something that I do a lot) is having a Veeam Backup free edition on a windows 10 OS (or maybe even an older one) and use that to do restores

i agree with mike, veeam endpoint agent and use the recovery iso to restore backup. if u need to access backups over the network - use command line (part of recovery iso) to set ip via netsh command. ive personally used this method and it works very well. hope this helps!
