Recovery media can't find NAS

Post by econaut »

When I boot from the recovery media I can't find my Synology NAS with the backup on it.

While in windows I can browse the shared folder setting in Veeam, and there's WORKGROUP showing.

This is not the case when browsing the same setting in the recovery media.

Hello econaut.

Network configuration should be preserved from the Operating System used for RE creation. Can you please check you network adapter configuration while Recovery Media is booted? Thank you.

In the command prompt I can ping google, but I cannot ping my NAS.

When I enter the path manually in the "shared folder" setting in the wizard, it says the following error message:

"„You can't connect to the file share because it's not secure. This share requires the obsolete SMB1 protocol, which is unsafe and could expose your system to attack.
Your system requires SMB2 or higher. For more info on resolving this issue, see: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=852747“"

Unfortunately, I don't understand the content at the microsoft link.

econaut,

Thanks for sharing. Was this recovery media created on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update machine? What type of NAS device are you using (model/firmware)?

Yes, it's Windows 10 with all updates, I created the recovery media just a few days ago.

The NAS is a Synology DS213+ with all updates as well, firmware is DSM 6.1.5-15254 Update 1, dating 2018/02/26.

Looks like Microsoft has dropped support for SMB v1.0 in latest operating systems and since Recovery Media uses Windows components you see this limitation in recovery environment too. Can you check the settings on your NAS and make sure the SMB2 or higher is configured. I believe this is possible via NAS web UI.

Mate,

The support for latest SMB versions was disabled in the NAS storage, so enabling SMBv3 was the solution.

Nope, there wasn't any option to switch from SMB v1 to SMB v3 in the NAS web management.
Firmware update was the solution.
