Failover Cluster and CSV's

Post by Anders »

We have a Microsoft Failover Cluster with an SQL 2017 instance running, that we want to backup. - I've read the KB 2463 about how to do that with Veeam, and got a few questions I'm unsure about.

First, our SQL cluster is running on Cluster Shared Volumes, as that halves failover times with SQL 2016 and forward, where it got supported.
The documentations says "◾Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) are skipped automatically during the backup."
It sounds like its a "feature" to skip them, but we kinda need them to be backed up!
Is this going to be a problem for us?

The Veeam server that we want to use as destination for the Agent would be in a management network with very tight security. That Veeam server cannot be part of the domain the SQL cluster is in. Is it a requirement that the Veeam server is part of the same domain as the Failover cluster?

In case there is an AD requirement for the Veeam server, is it in any way possible to have VAW backup a failover cluster to a file server/UNC location/CIFS share?
Or do we need to install and maintain a VM with a full veeam installation with a 0-socket license and 2 VAW licenses, just to back this up?

Hello Andreas,
SQL cluster is running on Cluster Shared Volumes
This is a by design limitation and not a feature. Frankly speaking, backup agent cannot process csv.
Is it a requirement that the Veeam server is part of the same domain as the Failover cluster?
Machine with backup agent should see (resolve) backup server and visa versa.
n case there is an AD requirement for the Veeam server, is it in any way possible to have VAW backup a failover cluster to a file server/UNC location/CIFS share?
It's possible but csv limitation remains.
