Migrating Veeam with remote SQL DB to new physical server
I am currently running Veeam B&R and Enterprise Manager v9 update1 on an old physical server. The Veeam Database is on a remote SQL server.
I am getting rid of the old server and want to move to a new physical server. I have read the KB article in doing so but since I currently have a Veeam v9 Database on a remote SQL server, I would like to continue on using that one. So, I made a configuration backup on the old Veeam server and a DB backup of the Veeam DB on the remote SQL server. I shut down all the services on the old Veeam server, then mounted the v9 iso on the new physical Veeam server. I installed Enterprise Manager first. After installing Enterprise Manger, I chose to install B&R.
I did not choose the install with the default configuration since I wanted to use the existing DB on the remote SQL server. I pointed the Veeam installer to use the remote SQL server and the remote VeeamBackup database. Now, I am getting the message "Configuration database is in use by Veeam Backup and Replication installed on "Old Veeam Server" Do you want to continue the installation?
I assume I should choose Yes since I want to use this remote SQL Veeam Database for the new physical server, correct? If so, after the installation is done, do I then need to do a "configuration restore" on the new Veeam server from the backed up configuration on the old Veeam server or will just using the remote SQL database be enough?
Do I also need to re-enter all the Veeam passwords in the Credential Manager?
I also do indexing of some VMs. The current VBRCatalog folder is on the old Veeam server. Do I need to copy all the contents of the folder to the new Veeam server?
Sorry for all the questions

Re: Migrating Veeam with remote SQL DB to new physical serve
Looks like I was on the right track with my questioning.
I did notice that my Veeam Backup and Reporting Database for my old Veeam server is on the old Veeam server itself in a local SQL instance and not on the remote SQL server that the Veeam DB is on. One the new server, should I let it install the local SQL instance and create a new local VeeamBackupReporting database then backup the old DB on the old Veeam server and restore it to the new Veeam server overwriting the current (empty) VeeamBackupReporting database?
Also, regarding the Veeam database, during the Veeam installation on the new Veeam server, if I were to choose not to use the existing DB on the remote SQL server and just create a new Veeam database on the new server and then do a "restore configuration" of the configuration on the old Veeam server, what information would I lose in doing so?

It is erroring out saying the version does not match. Looks I cant use the existing remote SQL DB since it is configured with v9 Update1. I will have to follow https://www.veeam.com/kb1845

One more question, Do I also need to re-enter the passwords for the Tape backups and the Configuration backups on the new server?

Could you elaborate on that a little bit? Are you wondering whether you need to re-enter passwords for the already protected data, such as tape backups and configuration ones? Thanks.

Re: Migrating Veeam with remote SQL DB to new physical serve
Under Mange passwords I have 2 passwords, 1 for the Veeam Configuration and 1 for the Tapes to encrypt.
I assume I have to re-enter both passwords on the new Veeam server? I just got the following error message on the new Veeam server

So, I re-entered the passwords on the new Veeam server and tried to do a manual configuration and got the following error:
Code: Select all
8/4/2016 10:34:25 AM Error Key not valid for use in specified state.

Re: Migrating Veeam with remote SQL DB to new physical serve
Hello, did you ever get a fix for this?
We have a Support Ticket open: Veeam Support - Case # 02630786
We created a new w2k16 VM, installed Veeam 9.5.0.1536 and connected the SQL (remote) database.
Everything works fine, except we cannot now run the Configuration Backup. It runs but never creates a new backup file
We get an error int eh logs (amongst others) ... Key not valid for use in specified state.
The support tech suggests we restore the Configuration Backup to onto the w2k16 VM... but that seems a bit extreme to me.
Any suggestions?

Re: Migrating Veeam with remote SQL DB to new physical serve
If I remember correctly, I had to open a case with Veeam support and had to work with them to generate a key set or something along those lines.

What was the solution. I'm in the same situation right now.
