How database backup works on physical Oracle Database server in Linux

Post by JasonPGTF »

Hi All,

I'm still very new to Veeam & in the midst of understanding how it works. So far based on my reading I found that Veeam is optimized to backup VM servers, the Veeam Explorer for Oracle is also referring to Oracle databases riding on a VM server.

May I know how it Veeam backup & recovery works for Oracle databases running on physical Linux Servers? My company is using Commvault currently as our backup solution & I'm exploring the possibility of migrating it to Veeam instead. Can someone point me to the right direction where should I look at to get more information on Oracle backups & recovery for Physical servers?

Hi Jason,

Thank you for the question and welcome to the Veeam community forums!

Physical servers running Linux can be backed up using Veeam Agent for Linux (VAL) https://www.veeam.com/linux-cloud-serve ... agent.html that is also a part of Veeam Backup & Replication bundle. The backups made through Veeam Agents allow backing up the whole machine, which basically means full system restoration. The backups are consistent on the file system layer, but do not imply any specific application processing related to Oracle, at least in the current version. In future versions of VAL we are planning to address the need for transaction consistency of Oracle DB.

Please take a look at the following thread: veeam-agent-for-linux-f41/oracle-explor ... 20Explorer

Also, below you can find out information on the unique Veeam B&R features we offer for virtual Oracle environments here:

Here is some brief information on the Veeam Agent for Windows:

Please let us know if you require more info or have any other questions.

In future versions of VAL we are planning to address the need for transaction consistency of Oracle DB. - Has this been updated in update 4 or are we still waiting on v10 for this to be able to work?

Hi Wikus,

Welcome to Veeam Community Forums and thanks for posting your query.

It's already there, added with VAL 3.0 release (part of B&R9.5 U4). Please refer to the documentation for additional information.

Regards,
Fedor
