Windows Agent Backups - Synthetic Fulls

Post by APangF1 »

When managing Windows Agent Backups from Veeam Backup and Replication, it allows Synthetic Fulls to be done at least once a week. An Active Full can be done every month or more, but it would be nice if we could also do Synthetic Fulls every month or more. Thanks.

The thinking behind this limitation is that with so many increments to work through, and given that backup storage is typically quite slow, this would result in extremely long synthetic full processing time. In fact, some computers - especially desktops and laptops - will not ever be "on" for long enough period of time to give the processing the chance to ever complete!

But why not create synthetic full without agent interaction? Is it really necessary that agent starts the task (with repo as target)?

Yes, it is necessary that that agent starts the task. This way, synthetic full can work with any backup target. Otherwise, we would have to implement target-specific logic, creating multiple "tunnels" for us to support and maintain.
