Very low processing rate after reinstalling Veeam

Post by Terry_Alfasol »

Setup with a dc/fileserver which had Veeam installed.
We've removed Veeam from that VM and made a dedicated VM for Veeam.
There's 2 backup jobs: 1 main backup to a NAS and a backup copy job to a USB device connected to that NAS

Since the reinstall, we're getting 5-6 MB/s on the processing rate.
Load: Source 17% > Proxy 2% > Network 13% > Target 88%
Primary Bottleneck: Target

We've started an active full, and has been on and off for a few days.
This message appearing everyday: some VMs were not processed during the copy interval.
Seems normal, as there's 2,6TB of data to process.

We've had errors before, but managed to get past those with the help of Veeam support.
Have to add the USB disk is unfortunately 2.0, but should get higher speeds than what we're seeing.

Any suggestions?

Hi Terry, most likely the reason is in gateway server location, please describe your setup in more details - hosts, repositories, transport mode, etc.

Well, it's a pretty basic setup

Proliant DL 380 gen 9, VMWare ESXi 6.0.0
We have 1 host integrated in the backup: server 2012 (dc, dns ,file server), about 2,6 TB
Veeam is installed on a seperate VM, which is also the proxy.
Main backup repository is a NAS - QNAP (Both network ports in trunking "balance-alb")
The main backup has a processing rate (latest) of 256 MB/s, which is fine.
The backup copy job stores its data on a USB device (client bought them, have a feeling they're USB 2.0, 4TB).
That USB disk is connected to the NAS (which holds the main backup) and is rotated.
Transport mode is default, ie direct.

Now it took about a 5 days for that backup copy job to run completely (everytime holding backup because of the main backup running as planned).
So as of sunday, the incrementals for that jub run in about 15 minutes, but still at a low speed of 10 MB/s
The next ful backup he has to copy, he'll need another 3-4 days to complete.

Hope this draws a bigger picture of the setup.

How repositories are added to Veeam B&R and how they were added before (when performance was better)?

USB is definitely the issue...Additionally, set up LACP (802.3ad) on your qnap and on switch ports it’s connected too.

An update: Veeam support indicated it was the USB device which could not handle the I/O load
It seems not every USB device is suited for this.

They recommended another repository.
