Backup Server Spec

Post by ChrisJ83Knights »

Afternoon all

I am currently pricing a new backup server, with the aim of utilizing Instant VM Recovery and SureBackup.

We currently have 33 backup jobs and 29 backup copy jobs, currently 10 VMs per backup job but this may change going forward, the spec is as follows.

HP DL380 Gen10
192GB RAM
2 x Xeon-Silver 4110 (8 Core CPU)
2 x Intel 10GBe NICs
2 x PSU
2 x 240GB M/U M.2 (RAID 1, For OS)
6 x 7.68TB R/I SSD (RAID 6, For Tier 1 VMs that require SSD performance)
16 x 1.8TB 10K (RAID 10, For Tier 2 VMs that require 10K performance)
1 x 800GB W/I SSD to utilize HP SmartCache Read/Write

We will also have some larger repository's hanging off this for GFS.

The 7.68TB SSDs will provide around 100K IOPs for both Random Read and Random Write and have a DWPD of 1.0.

I chose RAID 6 because of the size of disk and the time it would take to rebuild a disk leaving the server vulnerable if configured with RAID 5.

I am hoping this would mean we could introduce SQL transaction log shipping along with being able to utilize Instant VM Recovery, capacity wise both SSD and 10K allows for projected storage growth.

Any help/advice appreciated.

Hi Chris,

In all honesty, it is quite difficult to size your environment from my side. The only advice I can give you is that you go to the best practices document and get your calculations from there: https://bp.veeam.expert/

Cheers
