Tape Server install on a file server?

Post by MartinKelly »

Hello All,

I'd like to ask some advice regarding whether it is possible, or recommended to install the tape server on to a physical file server, and connect a tape library directly to it via a SAS HBA for a file backup?

I understand that a tape server can be installed on to a separate server which has the tape library attached, and then use that to backup the file server, but I was just thinking of improving performance and cutting out the additional server and going direct as it's the only server that will be backed up.

Best regards,
Martin.

Hello Martin.

I don't expect any issues with such setup, so you are good to go. Cheers!

Hi,

2 cents: connecting tape drives to ESX/ESXi hosts to be used as a passthrough device is something what is NOT supported. Another thing to keep in mind is if your file-server has enough horsepower to carry both roles.

Thanks

Hello, Thank you for your quick reply to my question.
I think that at the moment we may use a separate tape server after all because this will give us better future expansion options.

Best regards,
Martin.
