Restoring AD object on a server running earlier OS

Post by dtwiley »

This hasn't come up before in our environment but we've just found out we can't restore an AD object from a 2016 Domain Controller as the Veeam Console is running on a 2012 R2 server. This was confirmed when reviewing the system requirements.

Is there any way around this by perhaps installing the AD Explorer on the DC and mounting the restore point on on there somehow?

Unfortunately, not; but can you just create a temporary Windows Server 2016 VM or clone existing one, deploy backup server on it and then execute required restore procedure?

Anyway, it might be a good idea to update your backup server to Windows Server 2016, if you plan to restore AD objects in future.

Thanks!

Thanks, you mean install the console, restore the backup config to it, do the restore and then blow it away again? wont that break the production installation?

No need to restore backup server configuration, just import a backup to new server and then execute Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory. Thanks!
