Application Aware Processing with VeeamZIP

Post by check4backup »

Hi,

in addition to the normal backup I use VeeamZIP (Powershell) 1 / week. The backup with VeeamZIP is registered as a backup on an installed SQL server. This interrupts the SQL backup chain (full, differential).

Can Application Aware Processing be activated with VeeamZIP? The backup chain should not be interrupted (copy backup).

Best regards.

Hi, unfortunately, VeeamZIP does not perform application-aware image processing, so you cannot configure it to perform copy-only backup. If you need a second copy of you backup, it is typically recommended to use backup copy jobs that provide GFS-type retention for archival purposes. Thanks!

Hi,
I apologize for the delay in answering.
I use VeeamZIP to store the backups on removable media in a safe.
How do I configure this backup copy job (GFS)? Possibly like this:
1) I am creating a new local repository.
2) I create an additional backup copy job.
3) Target new local repository, normal rentention 2, GFS-Rentention 2 Friday
4) I then always copy the new local repository to the removable media.

Is that correct?

Can I restore the GFS backup using Veeam.Backup.Extractor.exe?

Can I simply create a new local repository? Create a separate normal backup job (separate backup chain) with Rentention 2 and then copy this repository to the removable media. Why a backup copy job?

Thanks

Yes, your understanding of the backup copy job setup is correct. You can even use the removable media as repository directly, without the need to copy backups there one more time. Full backups created by backup copy jobs can be restored by extract utility, since they are ordinary Veeam B&R backups. Backup copy jobs are preferred in this scenario, since they do not touch production VMs, like regular backup jobs do.

The documentation says that removeable media as repository not possible with GFS backups. In that case i must copy the files from repository one more time (to the USB Disk). Is that right? Is there an trick to avoid copying?

Thanks

Right, GFS is not supported for rotated drives, missed that.
