File Level Restore

Post by digitlman »

I'm thinking maybe this doesn't work in Veeam the way I think it does.

As I have stated before, my goal is to rid myself of Symantec Backup Exec for all SQL, Exchange, and file level backups.

We plan to virtualize our file server, making a 2nd disk (and seperate vmdk) for our "share".

With BE, you can install an agent in the OS, and specify files to back up, and BE backs them up and retains the permissions. And when you do a restore, BE puts them back in the original location with the original permissions.

In playing with Veeam, I make full backups of my test vm. I then go to FLR and Windows, and mount the backups. I can then browse the filesystem. However, my only options are to "copy to". I can then manually enter in a UNC path (or enter the admin share $ and browse) and navigate to where they are supposed to reside, and then they are copied over. This seems like a clunky way to do it.

Is there a better way I am not seeing?

Is that what all the "it's coming" announcements have been?

When can we expect v6? I know you don't want to speculate, but we're going to perform our P2V conversion in the next month, and we stopped our support with Symantec. We can still use the product, of course, even with the P2V vm, but it would be nice to know when we can let go for good.

My current estimate is late Q3 or early Q4 this year. Thanks.

What if you had to restore the entire file server if the original VM got trashed? Would it restore everything back with the shares etc? Should do in theory as the whole VM should be restored but just wanted to check!

Yes, that's right. As we are an image-based backup solution, the entire file-server image will be restored.
