Disabling SMB version 1

Post by AlexB82 »

Hi,
As part of a security audit, we're disabling SMB version 1 to cut down the risk of ransomware etc. If we disable v1 on the Veeam servers, will they have any issues backing up Server 2003 VMs as 2003 doesn't support SMB 2/3?

Thanks !!

Hello AlexB82,

Are you backing up database transaction logs from the mentioned VMs? Thanks!

There's a couple of 2003 servers with DBs that are backed up, but there's no specific jobs etc for the transaction logs. Would that be the limitation as I know VBR has to connect to the admin shares?

Hi Alex,

VBR requires SMB for Guest Processing and File Indexing, so if any of those are in use disabling SMB on the B&R server is not recommended.

Thanks
