multiple vss snapshots on 3par

Post by cgeorge »

Hey, Can anyone explain me this.
I use an offhost proxy to backup my vm's from our hyper-v cluster.
In the backup job, the checkmark "Allow processing of multiple vms with a single volume snaphot" is on.
But during the backup, the job is busy with processing for example 3 from the 20 vm's, when I have a look at the 3 par to volume where the vms are on, I see 3 vss snaphots on that lun???

I thought that checkmark prevents multiple vss snapshots on 3par?

Hi,

That checkmark allows to will group VMs and trigger Microsoft Hyper-V to create one volume snapshot for a group of VMs, instead of creating a volume snapshot per each processed VM.

Regarding the number of snapshots - I think you need these settings.

Thanks!

OK thnx, sow it's normal behaviour that there are more then 1 vss snapshot on the 3par lun where the backup up vm's reside on?

It depends. In order to let Veeam Backup & Replication create a single volume snapshot for a group of VMs, some requirements must be met:

- VMs must reside on the same host.
- Volumes on which VM files reside must use the same VSS provider for snapshot creation.
- The number of VMs in the group is limited: for a software VSS provider — 4 VMs, for a hardware VSS provider — 8 VMs.

Thanks!
