How to handle Customers with only 1 physical Server? (License Question)

Post by Ibeme »

Hi all,

how should we handle customers with only 1 physical server to backup due to the license changes in Veeam B&R 9.5 U4?
If I do understand it correctly, at least 10 instances have to be bought by a customer.

We do have many customers who only want to backup 1 physical server.
With the new licensing modell they would have to buy 10 instances which would be 3 servers and 1 workstation. (for example)

So a customer would have to buy more licenses that he needs.

The alternative for that would be the Community Edition.
Therefor we would have to install a Full Veeam B&R 9.5 U4 Installation on this single server which would have to be backed up which would cause overhead, that wasn't needed up to now.

Any idea on that or do misunderstand something?

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

how many CPU sockets does your server have?

For one physical server with less than two CPU sockets, you can buy Veeam Backup Essentials as unlimited license, see more information here: https://www.veeam.com/de/veeam-backup-e ... icing.html

Acutally, you could backup two hosts each having one CPU socket.

I'm speaking about 1 phyiscal server (no Virtualization).
So Veeam Endpoint Server is used in this case.

It's really just a physical server without any virtual machines on it which needs to be backed up.

How did you do it before? Agents were in 5 or 6 packs I believe, no? Or just Free and target a Veeam Repo?

Plus, as a Service Provider, isn't this what Veeam Availability Console is for? You just load your VAC with licenses and add a new company as required, and then create a business for your client. If they use one physical server, then that's it. Or what exactly are your people backing up and how do you usually do it?

Right, VAC and rental licensing is the way to go for anyone who manages backups for their clients. You will have a license that covers all your clients (for example, 1000 Enterprise Plus instances) and use it to protect 1000 clients, even if each client only has 1 server to protect.

Thank you for clarification.

Previous to the change to instanced it was possible to sell 1 Veeam Backup Agent for Windows Server.

After the change this is no longer possible.
I'm just thinking about the customers which aren't managed.

Those would have to buy 10 instances after the license change even if they don't need that many instances.

Alternative would be to switch them to Rental Licenses.

In fact, we too are thinking about them a lot ;) because we're losing money when selling 1 server agent to customers which aren't managed (on sale and support costs). This is the whole reason why we're introducing 10 instances minimum purchase size.

So, while we do want customers with a single server, we do need our service provider partners like yourself to manage them, for this to make any business sense to Veeam.
