Veeam Search Server & Sharepoint 2010

Post by NovoJosh »

Here are my notes on installing Veeam Search Server on Sharepoint 2010. Thought you might appreciate. Please keep in mind that I am not a SQL or Sharepoint expert and as such I have made each step as simple as I can. Hope this helps

SQL SERVER (Where Sharepoint 2010 is linked to)
1) Pick a Service Logon Account that you will use to run the Veeam Backup Search Server as
2) open up the SQL Manager
3) From the menu tree select Security then on Logins right click and select New Login…
4) In the New Logon Dialog box select the Service Logon Account
5) Under Server Roles, tick sysadmin  May be unnecessary
6) Click OK to save

SHAREPOINT 2010 Server
7) Download Latest Veeam Backup 64bit version if you don’t have it (since Sharepoint 2010 is 64bit only)
8) Extract Veeam_Backup_Search_Setup_x64.exe from the zip.
9) Pick a Service Logon Account that you will use to run the Veeam Backup Search Server as (same one as step 1)
10) Install Veeam_Backup_Search_Setup_x64.exe (You will need to select a service logon account)
11) Ensure the service is running

Sharepoint 2010 Site
12) Open up the Sharepoint Administration site
13) Under Application Management click Manage service applications
14) Click on Search Service Application (the top one, the lower one is the Proxy)
15) Ensure that Default content access account is filled out, take note of the Default Content Account

Veeam Backup Server
16) Find the VBRCATALOG file share (defaults to C:\VBRCatalog)
17) Modify Sharing and Security
18) Add the Default content access account (from step 15) to the Share Permissions, allow full permissions
19) For the Security add the Default content access account (from step 15) and allow modify  May be unnecessary (may only need read)

Veeam Enterprise Manager
20) Log onto the Veeam Enterprise Manager
21) Click Configuration (Top left hand link)
22) Click Search Servers
23) Click Add…
24) Input the Server name and the account name from step 1
25) Server type is Microsoft Search Server
26) Click OK – It will now check the crawling capabilities
27) The state should now be Active

This is what I know (which could be wrong)

1) Veeam makes catalogs
2) Veeam Enterprise Manager queries Veeam Search Server
3) Veeam Search Server uses Sharepoint 2010 search engine to run the search
4) Microsoft SQL server runs the query requested by Sharepoint 2010

Hello Josh,

Wow, thanks for posting you findings, great job, but let me slightly correct them.

There is no need to follow the first 6 bullets, as Veeam Backup Search Server doesn't use SQL Server, all the rest looks fine except for minor corrections:

SharePoint 2010 Server

1) Download Latest Veeam Backup 64bit version if you don’t have it (since Sharepoint 2010 is 64bit only)
Extract Veeam_Backup_Search_Setup_x64.exe from the zip.

2) Pick a Service Logon Account that you will use to run the Veeam Backup Search Server
This account should belong to Local Administrators Group on Search Server machine

3) Install Veeam_Backup_Search_Setup_x64.exe (You will need to select a service logon account)

4) Ensure the service is running

Sharepoint 2010 Site

5) Open up the Sharepoint Administration site

6) Under Application Management click Manage service applications

7) Click on Search Service Application (the top one, the lower one is the Proxy)

8) Ensure that Default content access account is filled out, take note of the Default Content Account

Veeam Backup Server

9) Find the VBRCATALOG file share (defaults to C:\VBRCatalog)

10) Modify Sharing and Security

11) Add the Default content access account (from step 8) to the Share Permissions
Read-only permission is sufficient

12) For the Security add the Default content access account (from step 8)
Read-only permission is sufficient

Veeam Enterprise Manager

13) Log onto the Veeam Enterprise Manager

14) Click Configuration (Top right hand link)

15) Click Search Servers

16) Click Add…

17) Input the Server name and the account name
This account should have administrative rights on Search Server machine

18) Server type is Microsoft Search Server

19) Click OK – It will now check the crawling capabilities

20) The state should now be Active

I found that I was getting errors if the service account account for Veeam search server was different than the Sharepoint search service account. For that reason I needed to add the login onto the SQL server and grant rights.

Veeam Search Server integration component should be installed on the machine with MS Search Server while Enterprise Manager can be installed on any other machine.
