Protection groups - Upgrade VBR to update 4

Post by masonit »

Hi

We have an test environment with VBR 9.5 u3a and Veeam agents for windows 2.2. After upgrade of VBR to u4, agent backup is not working anymore. Agents in protection group says upgrade required. Isen't it possible to run VBR 9.5 u4 with Agents 2.2 (win) and 2.0.1 (Linux)?

Mine work, though the three Windows HA Clusters I back up are throwing Warnings for the passive node, saying the disks aren't available. Since an Agent upgrade requires a .NET 4.6 install, which requires a reboot, the upgrade won't happen for a few weeks.

Chuck,

Thank you for sharing. Could it be due to the failover being performed while backup job was running? Thanks!

Checked with my DBAs, and no, these clusters were not failed-over when backups were running.

And it only happened the one time; all runs since then did not throw any warnings.

Hello.
Sorry to have to ask this question here, but can I also
create a protection group consisting of only virtual machines?

jessie0,

Yes, it's possible - you need to disable checkbox exclude virtual machines in the protection group properties. I'd recommend you to use agents with VMs only for testing (or in case there is a specific workload that cannot be protected with our VM backup due to it's nature), as Veeam B&R VM backup engine was specifically designed for agent-less backup of virtual machines, so has a smaller impact on your production environment. Cheers!

Hello Dima

Thank you for taking out time to comment on my post.

I am sorry but I don't quite understanding what you mean by "disable checkbox exclude virtual machines in the protection group properties".
Please explain. If possible, with a photo.

Thank you.

Also, I am guessing your advice is that I prioritize agentless backup for onsite VMs.
What would you recommend for offsite VMs running in a different network segments?

For the Active Directory type of protection group you need to uncheck the box All virtual machines. For regular protection groups you simply add the machine by host name or IP address and you are good to go.

For both VMs or physical agents the recommended approach would be to rely on Veeam Cloud Connect infrastructure, as it allows you to send backups to so called Cloud Repository. To learn more take a look at Veeam Cloud Connect Help Center. Hope that helps!
