Will the WAN Accelerator help

Post by matthewingram »

Hi,

I know the documentation states that the WAN accelerator will not help on links greater that 50Mbps. However, because of our choice in backup target our backup jobs are set to have compression and dedup disabled. This means the BCJ also has these disabled and we are sending full sized files over the WAN. In this case will the WAN accelerator help by adding compression and some dedup to the transport?

What is your backup target? You do not need to send uncompressed data over WAN, you can configure repository to uncompress it prior to writing to the target storage.

A Nimble array. Maybe its already doing that and I just don't know? The secondary site is setup as repo and the BCJ is going to the repo setup on a remote Nimble. I thought the trsnfer went from the source proxy directly to the repo. Where would it get decompressed in the other data center before being written?

How did you add the target storage to Veeam B&R? It's in repository settings. If you're using CIFS, make sure you're specifying a gateway server located in the same DC. This way data will flow between proxy and repository/gateway servers in compressed format and then land the storage uncompressed.

It's setup as direct windows storage on ReFS for both the local repo server and and the remote.

Then you can set the target repo to uncompress data and enable compression in the backup copy job.
