raid 6 vs 60

Post by leithm »

any benefit doing raid 60, 24 disks 2 spans vs two 12 x disk raid 6 arrays? can stitch together with scale out repo

reason i ask is i have 12 x 8tb + 12 x 6tb... would rather use the 6tb disks instead of buying new 8tb disks or reducing size of array

thanks

Hello Leith.

The few things I've read about RAID60 is that it's overkill, but then it really depends on what you need. Apparently, RAID 60 provides high data transfer speeds in addition to the two sets of parity.

I have four repos that are using RAID 6 and they all work well.

Hi,
the benefit would be higher speed. On the other hand, in your configuration, you would loose capacity. The choice is up to you :-)

From a Veeam perspective it's not really relevant.

Best regards,

AVAGO/LSI 3108, RAID60 here, 2 spans of 17 x Seagate EXOS 12TB 7K disks + 2 hot-spares, blazing fast and reliable so far.

@Ctek, would be able to provide read/write metrics?
