VB&R9.5 - Backup Copy job behavior on full restore point

Post by henlen »

We are going to use VB&R 9.5 (not update 4) to backup a number of VMs to a disk storage (primary repository), then copy to another disk storage (secondary repository) by a Backup Copy job.

We plan to configure the Backup Copy job with 31 restore points, run once everyday, and have 4 full backup, made weekly on Saturday.
After 28 days, the backups stored in the secondary repository should be like below:

Week1: Full Inc Inc Inc Inc Inc Inc
Week2: Full Inc Inc Inc Inc Inc Inc
Week3: Full Inc Inc Inc Inc Inc Inc
Week4: Full Inc Inc Inc Inc Inc Inc

What would happen on the 29th day, assuming it's Saturday again? Will Veeam make a new full backup for week5? If yes, then which full backup (week1? week2? week3? week4?) will Veam remove? If remove, what will happen to the incremental backups relying on it?

If we want to reduce the number of full backups to, say, 2 only, but still keep 31 restore points. How would Veeam handle? Which week(s) will have full backups on Saturday?

Hello,
the easiest way to see what happens on each day for BCJ retention is using the "manual run" checkbox in the restore point simulator

After clicking through it, did it answer all your questions?

Best regards,
Hannes

Note: question mark for query string was missing in the link. Corrected link:

Thanks. I tried the simulator with configuration of 31 restore points and 4 weekly full backups, then simulate the daily status by the "1x" button of "manual run".
But the result did not feel right.
The 1st full backup was created on the 1st day. But the 2nd full backup was not created until the 34th day.
Is the simulator performing correctly?

yes, it is performing correctly. :-)

On the day where you would expect the full to be created, the incremental is marked as "this will become a full". When it is a full (by merges), the full file will be copied. That saves IO and reduces load on the backup storage.
