App Passwords?

Post by Daithi »

Hi,

Why do we have to use app passwords to use modern authentication? We have our internal network as a trusted network in MFA and it will bypass the MFA check. Can Veeam not authenticate with the standard username and password?

Currently, this scenario isn't supported. We will require the app to connect via MFA. The other solution would be to use an account which uses legacy authentication.

Thanks, appreciate the reply and that app passwords can be necessary for organisations but it's unfortunate trusted networks aren't supported.

Daithi,

If you have enabled the option to skip multi-factor authentication for the given IP addresses, you should be able to use a regular password instead of app password. App passwords are required for a general use case when an account is configured to pass multiple verification methods.

I'm gonna test it in my lab environment but it'll take some time to configure things. If you could check it within your infrastructure, I'll be happy to know the results.

Thanks!

I think that works fine. I still get can't past the "No Sharepoint Plan" found message but it connects to all the other services. That's really handy now.

Good to know, thanks for the update.
For SharePoint, looking forward to getting your logs via the support case.

Thanks, unfortunately there seems to be a little problem adding our new Office 365 licence to my case admin view but I'll send on once I get them and log a ticket.

Not to mention the instructions for that modern authentication setup is horrid. To define an App Secret, see Microsoft's documentation, which has ZERO mentions of Secret anything on it.

If you leverage the new azure preview model for applications, it’s very clear where you can add the secrets but we’ll soon have a detailed post available on it.

Hey Steve,
We are going to deliver a guide and blogpost for this, it is in final review stage now and will have all the details. I understand that it is a bit complicated (and actually requires lots of steps). To be honest, I was a bit surprised when googling this myself a few months ago (during internal test phases) and finding almost zero results that could help me further, while this is the MSFT preferred method of connecting "APPS" to O365
