Feature request: show progres of snapshot removal

Post by FrancWest »

Hi,

when running a replication job, the 'applying retention policy' step on some VMs takes quite a long time. This is the removal of the VM snapshot. Would it be possible to show the progress percentage on this Veeam task? Now I have to switch to vCenter in order to view it's progress, but when replicating to a remote site, I don't have access to vCenter, so I don't know how long the snapshot removal will take or what it's progress is. It would be nice to have this percentage available inside Veeam. I don't know though if vSphere exposes this percentage outside of vCenter to be queried by 3rd party applications.

Franc.

Hi Franc,
Thanks for the request. I believe it's possible to implement.
How much time does the smapshot removal usually take in your case?
Thanks!

Hi,

On our largest VMs (datawarehouse-server and Ifileservers) it takes up to one hour per VM to remove the snapshot. This is a daily replication job.

We also use replication to build our lab. This job runs every 2 to 3 months to refresh our lab. For this job, snapshot removal can sometimes take up to 3,5 hour for a specific VM.

Just a small comment here, that the value is potentially not as helpful as you think.
At Backup we show progress based on the vCenter status bar for snapshot removal. This is the only way to get informations arround this process.
This bar usually stay for longer time at a specific %tage value and then jump to 100% at once. In the end it is nearly the same situation as today without the %tage.

but in vCenter I do see the percentage increase in snapshot removal. Yesterday Veeam removed the restorepoint for a 2TB VM, which took 4,5 hours. During this I saw the percentage increasing gradually from 0 to 100 percent. Ok, not with steps of 1% each time, but it gave me a good idea how far the snapshot removal had progressed. I know this isn't an accurate progress bar, but with such a large VM it makes quite a difference if the progress shown is 20% or 85% ;-).
