veeam on OEL 7.3

Post by cormansa »

Hi,

I'm testing veeam backup and replication on some servers.

Basic test are : save a windows server, a linux server and a cluster of linux servers (A Virtual IP for backup)

OS :
Oracle Linux Server release 7.3 based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.3 (Maipo)

Active kernel:
3.10.0-514.el7.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 3 17:15:05 PDT 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

RPM package installed :
kmod-veeamsnap-3.0.1.1046-1.el7.x86_64
veeam-release-el7-1.0.7-1.x86_64
veeam-3.0.1.1046-1.el7.x86_64

Problem:
backup not work

reason :
No character device registered for veeamsnap kernel module.
Failed to perform managed backup
Failed to create volume snapshot

Additional information :
I do some search on internet.

I tried :
> modprobe veeamsnap
modprobe: FATAL: Module veeamsnap not found.

> ls /lib/modules/3.10.0-514.el7.x86_64/extra
veeamsnap.ko

How can I get veeam working without reboot server and/or install dkms.
Reason : these servers run database connection to the factory.

regards

Hi,

It seems that you've installed kmod version which is not supported for Oracle Linux. Can you install dkms instead?

Thanks!

Hi,

Install dkms on production and running server (who run oracle database server). :!:

Before do that, I will ask suppliers for the oracle database part and for the clustering software.

I cannot reboot the servers.

Well, dkms does not require server reboot. As an alternative way you can setup a separate server with the very same kernel version as the production one, build the kernel module from source there, and use the resulting binary on the production.

Thanks!

Hi,

so ... I need some details for building veeamsnap module from other server.

I create a basic install of OEL 7.3 with kernel 3.10.0-217 with dkms enabled, install veeam and veeamsnamp and after get veeamsnap.ko from this server and copy to production server.
is it correct ?

You need to create a basic install with kernel version that exactly matches the version that your production is running. Then please follow these steps.

Please mind the following:

- clustered systems are currently not supported by VAL
- although the proposed solution might work for RHCK, it won't work for UEK kernels, so make sure you're not running UEK before trying to run the module on the system
- self-built modules cannot be officially supported by Veeam

Thanks!
