Re: Feature Request - Create Backup from Recovery Media
Just came here looking for the same thing other people are requesting. Have computer that needs data recovery of deleted files, and don't want to risk booting from the drive. Its also a M.2 PCIe AHCI SSD, which apparently no one make enclosures for, M.2 SATA, M.2 NvME enclosures didn't work.
Now I'm off to get an Acronis Boot Disk or something.

+1
Especially more useful now with being able to recover agent backups to any VM type -> P2V.
Thanks,
Mike

[MERGED] Windows Agent "to go"?
I'm wondering if there's a possibility to create a bootable Windows stick (e.g. PE10) with a Veeam Windows Agent to backup a device by booting via the stick.
Background: we are faced to one-time backup a lot of windows devices (multiple W10 versions, multiple hardware vendors) before cleaning and selling them.

I think your request is similar to my feature request:

Thanks for answering.
If the computers are connected to the network I would suggest deploying VBR and backing up these computers altogether using Agent Management functionality. Should be easier rather than going on by one with the USB stick.

hi,
what you want is software that can do bare metal backup.
imho, booting a usb stick with agent is not possible, as agent is software that needs to be installed on a running windows os.
i do that all the time and i could recommend solution.
but as a user of vagent and vbar community edition, i do not want to be dis-respectful to veeam and post about other software.

Re: Feature Request - Create Backup from Recovery Media
I'd find this a useful option as I'm in the process of restoring a physical server but there's one thing I haven't seen mentioned here that I think is likely to be a contributor to why Veeam haven't worked out a way of doing it yet (that they agree to) is licensing - reading one of the old comments saying "I have 250 laptops I need to re-image and would like to have backups of them first" how do the end-users think licensing would work in this model? 250 clients for a "one-off" backup would be very expensive to license in the current model so they'd need to figure out a whole new way of licensing this use-case (way different from what they do today). So, I suspect it won't be happening very soon...

I cant see a way to manage all the bare metal backups centrally, so it's more or less manual operation which, in my opinion, should be free. Cheers!why Veeam haven't worked out a way of doing it yet (that they agree to) is licensing - reading one of the old comments saying "I have 250 laptops I need to re-image and would like to have backups of them first" how do the end-users think licensing would work in this model?

Re: Feature Request - Create Backup from Recovery Media
+1,000,000
Ability to make a offline image is a feature which is gold and I can't believe, any backup vendor (worth their weight in gold) doesn't have this option.
Also, can't believe there isn't more a push from the user base for this feature.
Have a machine which....
- The Backup software doesn't support through a Agent. Boot to a recovery image and take a manual image.
- wont boot, issues with the agent, or has suffered some sort of virus hit... Boot to a recovery Image and take a image, before attempting anything.
I'm 100% sure its nothing to do with any physical limitation (in regards to a previous previous poster suggesting you need a OS.. A recovery media is a OS.. and veeam has one from what I've read). Most likely its a Veeam decission because they can't 100% control it. Cant give anything away for free...... just as they release the latest "Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition "10 user license free option. Its free (sort of); but like with all digital media, suspect it can be killed off at any point...
Acronis has been providing this option since at least 2005 using Windows PE and Linux recovery media boot options. Unfortunately they've also discontinued the ability to take a image from their recovery media with more recent versions. Its one of the reasons I'm looking to get rid of Acronis (in addition to the expensive subscription only costs)
To the Veeam Execs looking to squeeze as much $$ out of their user base - Here's an idea.... Make any image taken via boot media (offline image), require a challenge/response activation code to be able to restore. IE Backup creates a code, which needs to be entered into a website to get a activation code used to restore the image. The backup software can have the license embedded in the boot image, and the web user account must have the backup license attached to their profile.
Just my 2 cents
Paul

I made a bootable USB Windows 11 using FlashBoot. Agent installation is OK.asdffdsa6131 wrote: ↑Nov 17, 2020 5:45 pm hi,

It is possible to backup/restore a sysprep-ed PC with that method.
So it is possible to make cold backup/restore using Veeam agent!
