Feature Request: Replication Enhancements

Post by segfault »

Here are a few things that would be nice for the SureBackup and Replication side of the house:

1) Clone an Application Group. So many of our apps have the same base (DNS, AD, LDAP, etc) and we have to re-create each Application group from scratch each time.

2) Ability to have Application Groups based on Replicas NOT shut down when the source replica job kicks off. Right now, we use SureBackup to test our DR replicas. This requires us to pause all associated replication jobs.

3) Not tie an Advanced Multi-Host Virtual Lab to a single ESXi host. Or at least the ability to migrate the host to a new one if the original ESXi host is retired or replaced.

Thanks,

Note that this is something that can be done with Veeam Availability Orchestrator through the use of lab groups.

VAO is currently a $120/per-VM license cost. We are looking at 200+ VM's for our entire DR setup. It is simply not cost effective for an organization such as ours that supports a large number of small applications.

It would be very difficult to justify the uplift cost for a few minor features such as lab groups over what B&R already offers. We would be looking at $24k/yr just for VAO. As a point of comparison, we only needed a 30 socket B&R Enterprise Plus license (one time cost) to backup our entire infrastructure, including development.

If VAO was a 10% cost uplift on top of B&R Enterprise and sold in the same per-socket perpetual licenses, I would jump on it. Instead it works out to a bit over a 100% uplift over a 3 year term.

Lab groups are just a very small part of VAO. VAO's main benefits are automated DR testing, delegation of DR administration, and automated DR documentation. VBR itself brings DR, but for DR automation with 200+ VMs then VAO is extremely beneficial.
