Deduplicating Storage Appliances for AHV

We require a new backup repository and are using Nutanix AHV for some workloads (we are predominantly Hyper-V at present however the aim would be to utilize AHV more and reduce Hyper-V usage), we would wish to purchase something which works natively with AHV and Veeam.

I have read through the Nutanix AHV release notes and User Guide, can I just confirm
Only Exagrid and Quantum DXi are supported as direct repositories (i.e It is possible to create a Veeam job and backup straight into them)

If EMC Datadomain or HP Storeonce are used then a separate landing area is required and then a separate copy job is necessary to move the data into the appliance ?

This is correct, exagrid and quantum devices can be used as the primary backup target.

Other dedupe devices would need a different primary backup target and then from veeam backup and replication you can schedule a backup copy job to the dedupe device.

That primary can be a server with local disk.

This is being looked at for future versions of VAN.

You can use Data Domain or StoreOnce directly, but you'd have to configure CIFS shares on them to use the devices as a primary repo for AHV backups. Boost or Catalyst require backing up elsewhere first then copying to the appliance.

I'm will confirm with Dell/EMC whether there are significant downsides of using CIFS shares against their native Boost protocol on Datadomain to see how much of a performance impact this has.

Can I confirm one further point please.
We are testing using the AHV backup proxy the repository is a CIFS share from an EMC Datadomain and it is working fine. However, if we needed some support or assistance can we call Veeam and log a support call as normal in this configuration ?

Absolutely. The configuration is supported so yes you can open support tickets if you experience an issue.
