Is there a NIST compliant version of VBR?

Post by srdegeus »

preface:
To be NIST compliant we are 'forced' to follow the "least privilege" model.
For our day to day backup (monitoring) operations we rely on our 'IT operations helpdesk'. However they are not allowed to have any administrative rights on any device in the "server network". In order to allow the 'helpdesk' to monitor the backup, our plan is to have them connect as a user to a 'jump box' in our server lan that has the VBR console installed.

However the VBR console (also when installed separately) wants to run with elevated rights. Is there a way to suppress this? (a loss of partial functionality is acceptable for us.) Or is there another possibility to have them monitor the backups? (We briefly investigated if we could copy the log-files to a central log server, but that was abandoned as the log-files are 'too big'.) We have also looked at granting them (the 'helpdesk') access to the Enterprise manager, but that was deemed not a viable option.

What happens if you configure Backup Viewer role for them? Thanks!

I tried the Backup Viewer group approach, but the VBR console still requests elevation.

We had trialed Veeam ONE (the "Data Protection" part) , but both the Reporter as the Monitor do not give (enough) insight in job Warnings and/or Failures.

Can you elaborate on what specific information was missing in Veeam ONE? Thanks!

Have you checked such reports as Backup Alarms Overview and Current Backup Alarms State?
Thanks!
