Bare-metal recovery with Veeam Backup Essentials

We have a Veeam Backup Essentials standard 6 sockets license. There are 3 physical servers in
the backup infrastructure: a Hyper-V cluster (two nodes) and a Hyper-V standalone host. The
only Veeam B&R backup server is a VM running on the Hyper-V standalone host.

I have read Veeam Essentials now provides protection for physical servers and workstations too.
What deployment must be done to backup the physical servers (excluding the VMs they are
running) in order to perform a bare-metal recovery when necessary?.

Hello,
not sure I understood your question, I try... the only thing you need to do is configure a backup job with "entire computer". Afterwards create a boot media. See user guide for details.

The physical Hyper-V server has two drives: C (OS) and D: (VMs data). There is already a Veeam job backing up the VMs. Is there a way to exclude the D: drive from the entire computer backup job?.

Hello,
no, but you can use volume level backup. You can test in a VM whether it boots. You could even use "instant recovery to Hyper-V" as the fastest way of testing.

I'm currently in the same trial, let me add a question:
'item level backup' doesn't allow to select a complete boot drive (including this famous windows 500MB boot partition), it's limited to just a drive letter.
How to deal with that?

And: testing via 'instant rec. to Hyper-V' would not create a duplicate to the original host which then conflicts?

not sure which option you mean with item level, but if you chose "volume level" you can check "operating system"





That will do the job.

Yes, it will be a duplicate. It's a restore test So disconnecting the network makes sense of course. You an also do a normal bare metal restore. It will also create a duplicate, but takes longer as it requires more manual steps.

obviously I'm in the wrong sub-context, I don't see 'Volumes' at all.
Backup job -
Job Mode is server, managed by backup server
Name, add computer
Backup mode: Volume level backup
Volumes to backup: mark operating system and option to enter a volume drive letter.
But there isn't a 'Volume' option on the left side which I can mark, like in your print screen.

Hi gga33,

Just use an image sharing tool or dropbox or onedrive or google whatever to share a print screen. Then we can have a look.

But, if you selected Operating System, you will have automatically the C:\ drive included as you described as what you need.
