Feature Request: Remote Agent Restore

Post by controlfreak » 1 person likes this post

Acronis backup supports remote agent restore (full image restore) from the acronis remote management console. This does not require the use of physical restore media on the agent system. Obviously this requires that the computer being restored is online and has a functioning OS, agent, and network connection.

Would love to see this feature added to the Veeam agents managed by VBR.

Thanks,

Control

Hello Control,

Thanks for your request, consider it's noted!

Out of curiosity, how you see the remote bare metal restore functionality (as we would need to boot the recovery media anyway)? Could it be performed via PXE boot or end user can load Recovery Media and then restore admin should gain control over the restore process? Cheers!

Vision: Bare Metal Restore without USB Stick (Direct from the B&R Console)

Post by Karl Ferbos » 1 person likes this post

Hello,

We've been working with veeam for years to secure our ESXi virtual landscape and some physiscal Server.

We also do image backups of our physical production clients using Acronis Enterprise, and can restore the entire clients (including OS partition) quickly and directly from the acronis console without having to plug in any USB stick.

Since we want to consolidate our Backup Landscape, we would like to replace Acronis and in the Future make the images backups of production physical Clients via veeam.

But it would be good if we had the opportunity to restore the entire Machine (including OS partition) directly from the Veeam Console without using any recovery USB stick (as acronis can do it right now).

Does anyone know if this feature will be integrated one day?

Best regards

Hello,
and welcome to the forums. I merged your request with an existing one.

As far as I understand, Acronis does not need any PXE boot, but requires a "more or less working" Windows - right?

Best regards,
Hannes

Correct, the acronis remote restore process requires a working windows OS and a working acronis agent installed. The console can initiate a restore on the agent via the network, but does not use pxe or any other physical media. I am not sure how they accomplish this black magic, but it works as described.

Thanks,

We have used Acronis' remote restore functionality typically after situations where a software update or configuration change has rendered an application unusable, but the OS and Acronis agent are still in tact. This is accomplished by connecting the Acronis Management Console to a managed machine running an operating system and Acronis agent and issuing a recovery task. Configuring the task involves selecting the data you wish to recover; providing appropriate credentials to the archive location and for executing the task; selecting what you want to recover (registered machine & disk/volume/files, etc); selecting a date/time (or immediate or manual) for when to start recovery; and selecting recovery options (such as pre/post recovery commands, recovery priority, error handling and notification). You are able to watch the task execution progress, up until the machine reboots.

We are transitioning to Veeam and would love to have this available in a future release!

Hello and welcome to the community Emily,

Thank you for the detailed explanation and consider your vote being added to the feature request.
selecting what you want to recover (registered machine & disk/volume/files, etc)
You actually can restore files and volumes remotely via Veeam B&R Console (file level restore and volume level restore functionality)

I just stumpled upon this thread. We always did recover via Recovery Medium, but just came across a situation, where the computer still boots, but we want to restore it to a previous state.

Is the recovery media still needed to restore a still booting physical windows computer or has this feature request already been completed?

Hello,
you still need to boot with the recovery media to restore the operating system. No changes on Veeam side.

Best regards,
Hannes
