Best Practice for setting up Retention Policy

Post by PanianTech »

Hello,

We are new to Veeam and we are using it to replace our current Avamar system.

We are running a single physical Veeam B&R server that has 2 sockets 8 core and 256GB of physical 40TB of iSCSI storage.

What we were looking to retain to have was:

8 Daily backups (Full/Inc)
5 Weekly backups (Full)
1 Monthly backups (Full)
1 Yearly backup (Full)

We are accepting to the model where we have a weekly full backup, and subsequently daily incremental (which I was told is preferred for Veeam.)
It appears that Veeam uses the Backup Copy to define retention, and not the Backup.

Is there any documentation that has BP for setting up Veeam B&R jobs?

Hi Ardo, you're correct that GFS retention is currently available in backup copy jobs only (allows you to comply with the 3-2-1 rule). So you would need a regular backup job first and then backup copy job with 8 restore points retention and 5/1/1 for weekly/monthly/yearly backups.
