Backup EC2 instance to S3
Hello Veeam team,
i'm looking for a solution to backup my AWS EC2 Linux instances and store those backups on S3 (without storing AWS EBS snapshots not to incur additional charges). Ideally those backups should be incremental (first backup is a full-backup, and others contain only the difference) meaning that they should work the way like AWS EBS snapshots work. The solution should provide the ability to quickly restore the instance from S3 (or at least restore the EBS snapshot/EBS volume). At the moment i researched several available options:
- Veeam N2WS - seems like a perfect match, but has a 8TB limit for all attached volumes in total
- Veeam Backup & Restore - seems like support only VMWare/VMWare on AWS
- Linux agent - seems like doesn't support "incremental requirement" and target AWS S3 storage type (only SFTP, NAS, etc) and does require additional volumes attached to store intermidiate data before moving it to target storage
Am i missing any other solution that suits my needs?
Thanks,
Andrey

Hello,
unfortunately, you are not missing anything. N2WS has the 8TB limitation.
Veeam Backup & Replication (don't mix with Backup & Recovery which is N2WS) is for VMware local and on AWS, correct.
Agent for Linux has the limitations you mention. correct.
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Backup EC2 instance to S3
thanks Joe, it got probably lost in translation. yes, veeam agent for linux can do incremental backups of course, but not based on EBS snapshots as requested. they are done inside the VM

Re: Backup EC2 instance to S3
VAL can perform incremental backups on EC2 Linux instances? I guess these are not AMI instances as this is not supported as I understand it.

Re: Backup EC2 instance to S3
It doesn't matter if it's EC2, on-premises virtual, or physical. If VAL is installed it takes incremental backups. More details on how VAL backups work is in the user guide.

Re: Backup EC2 instance to S3
Thanks Joe but AWS EC2 AMI Linux instances are not supported for VAL installation. That's my understanding.

Re: Backup EC2 instance to S3
correct. I found some stuff internally that there are some manual "hacks" to get it working, but AMI is still unsupported.

Re: Backup EC2 instance to S3
Thanks Hannes. Does anyone know if there are plans for supporting this on the road map?

not in V10 and anything else is too early to comment right now. There are some plans, but no timeline
