Veeams Stance on Microsoft Extended support

Post by AdrianL »

Hello Team,

What is Veeams stance on environments where users have Windows 2008R2 & SQL Server 2008R2 both due for end of support however they have the possibility for limited extended support.

Is it the case Veeam simply do not provide support or is it a best effort support for the OS and application. To add to this, in-guest application aware backups would be in place.

I was hoping to get some clarity on the systems that fall in to that grey area of:
1. Extended support
2. Limited extended support
and
3. For the systems that are fully out of support i.e. MS Server 2003

Many thanks in advance,

I have included the material references I have today on the Server, SQL support dates and Veeam support details.

Veeam Support versions:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... 95u4#guest

Vendor details:

- Windows Server 2008 R2
Support: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-p ... erver-2008
On January 14, 2020, support for Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will end. That means the end of regular security updates. Don't let your infrastructure and applications go unprotected. We're here to help you migrate to current versions for greater security, performance and innovation.

- SQL 2008 R2
Support: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlrel ... r-2008-r2/ Extended support: 7/9/2019.

Hello Adrian,

We might add or remove some operating system versions when new product version is getting released but existing product versions should work with all operating systems declared in the System Requirements. Makes sense?

Hello Dima,

That makes complete sense. I guess the limitation would then be that we couldn't upgrade the Veeam version thus eventually it would also fall out of support so ideally get a roadmap in place to upgrade the relevant OS/apps asap.

It would also limit the latest and great functions and features.

For anything outside of that support so for example, in the following URL (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... 95u4#guest) for 9.5U4 it will support Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3, but if the system is running "Service Pack 2", then this version of Veeam will NOT support that SQL version and they either upgrade or fall out of support - correct?

Thanks in advance, again :)

I replaced "Windows 2008R2 & SQL Server 2008R2" with X, because it is the same for everything :D

The short answer is, we always try to support the latest build of the corresponding platform for at least 6 to 12 months following the official End of Support date from the actual platform vendor, as to give our customers some extra time to migrate off of them. We don't usually take "limited extended support" options in consideration, however our customers who choose to follow this path can always simply continue using their existing Veeam version which officially supports the required platform version.
