Slow tape backup/operations after 9.5 U4a

Post by ned »

I have a major issue with extremely slow tape backup/operations. My other backups are running fine. I believe the issue started after U4a. With 9.5 U4 I started testing NDMP tape backups and had issues from the start. I worked with support and applied an engineering fix, U4a when it came out, followed by post-U4a fixes (Fix_163981_768466c43f, Fix_167059_bddbd3520b). I've had a case open with support for 5 weeks now and not making any progress. There is a lot of detail in the case notes. I'm putting the NDMP issues aside - my focus is getting the VM tape backups working again. Tape backup throughput dropped from ~200+ MB/s to ~70 KB/s - effectively broken.

Veeam support case: 03528875

Environment:
Dell R730xd server - Windows 2016 - large "local" disk SOBRs - FC-SAN attached - OS and FW current
Oracle/STK SL150 tape library (IBM LTO7 tape drives) - partitioned - FC-SAN attached - IBM LTO7 tape driver (IBMTape.x64_w16_6266) - firmware current
EMC Data Domain DD9300

Has anyone else experienced such a major tape backup throughput (drop) issue like this?

Thanks, Ned

We don't have any outstanding performance issues in 9.5 U4a besides ones already mentioned - 163981, 167059, but even those issues are connected to virtual full backup performance, not backup to tape job performance, in general.

So, kindly, keep working with our support team on identifying the root cause.

Thanks!

Qlogic QLE2662 HBA driver update (from 9.2.3.20 to 9.2.9.23 - same firmware 8.08.203) from the Qlogic download site resolved my tape backup throughput issue. The performance of the tape (IBM LTO7) operations/backup fully returned right after the upgrade. Thanks to Veeam support for the help with the IBM ITDT tape diagnostic test tool.

# IBM ITDT tape diag tool site

# Qlogic support HBA driver download site

Example of problem tape backup throughput:
Veeam file to tape test - 18GB of data files.

Test/Problem (Qlogic HBA driver 9.2.3.20):
72 hours 49 minutes
64 KB/s

Test/Resolved (Qlogic HBA driver 9.2.9.23):
2 minutes 41 seconds
233 MB/s

Thanks for updating, I'm in the exact same boat. I also have a QLogic HBA so will put the spotlight onto this.
