Different block size on same Raid Disk

Post by xaba_xg »

Hi,

i have created a RAID6 (24 disks) on my W2016 backup repository (100TB)
I want create two different partitions:

First Partition = ReFS with Block Size 64K for Veeam
Second Partition = ReFS with Block Size 4K (Default) for Software Repository

there are problems if i use different block sizes on the same Raid disk ??

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

While it is not really a Veeam question... well, I don't expect any issues for your use case.

The only problem I see is that Veeam and Microsoft don't recommend using 4KB block size for large files like image-level backups (thus the warning in our UI). Why do you want second partition with a different block size?

just to clarify:

RAID stripe size is one thing: (64KB, 128 KB, 256KB whatever has best Veeam performance for the hardware you have). The whole RAID-set has the same stripe size.

Veeam partition will be configured with ReFS with 64KB block size which is the Veeam & Microsoft recommendation
Second partition will have different block size (for whatever reason). With the information given (it sounds like storing ISO files) so my opinion is, that it is completely irrelevant what block REFS block size he uses or whether it is NTFS.

Best regards,
Hannes
